History of Goldsmiths United Football ClubIn 1942 a group of students from Goldsmiths 'University' in the City decided to form a Saturday football team, and Goldsmiths Utd were born. With the War in it's darkest days, several members were called up, and sadly, not all returned. At the resumption of organised football, honors were won in the S.E.London Amateur League during the forties and fifties, and they then switched days to Sundays and joined the London & Kent Border League, where they gained various cup and divisional titles in the sixties. Meanwhile the latest generation of students were now playing out of the relocated Goldsmiths 'College' at New Cross, and included the Pope brothers, of which Ron went on to become secretary of the Metropolitan Sunday League for many years. After a lean period during the late seventies and early eighties, Gold’s moved to the Metropolitan Sunday League, where their fortunes improved with several cup wins and promotions. At one stage there were five 'Kedge' brothers playing in the same team, though with the changing times, student players were a thing of the past. It should also be noted that without the dedication and organisation of Carol & Keith Hope during this period, our club wouldn’t be around today. Dave Wilson took over as manager in 1992, with Bob Green following him from a successful spell in Saturday football to look after administration & finances. After 4 years in the Metropolitan League, which included a run to the quarter-finals of the London Junior cup, took them into the Orpington & Bromley District Sunday League in 1996. They immediately made an impact, with runners-up in Div I and also in the Michael Gray cup, helped by the prolific goal scoring of the clubs all-time record goalscorer (210), Malcolm Woodward. The following season saw another runners-up spot in the Premier Division, and promotion to the Senior Division, along with a run to the Kent Premier cup Q/Finals. The next two years saw the gradual break up of the old team, with long serving players like Les Wilson, Robbie Cooke, and Dennis Martin all hanging up their boots, and the dreaded ‘drop’ just avoided, before the fortunes of the club were revived with the influx of players from our 'sister' clubs on Saturdays and Sundays, AFC Blackheath and Huntsman. Dave Wilson moved to Club Secretary, with Jeff Allen taking over as manager. Season 2000/01 saw the fulfillment of a dream when Jeff Allen lead the team to a thrilling championship title, which was decided (on goal diff), on the last day of the campaign. A proud moment for players like Micky Cooke (22 years service) and Ian Barnes from the 'Old' Gold’s. We also went on to win the Ted Connor Charity Shield in 2001, beating old rivals Coney Hall. The following season we went one better when we retained the Championship and Charity shield, but added the Presidents Charity Cup to our haul of trophies, a landmark season for our old club, whilst Dave Wilson celebrated 10 years at Goldsmiths. The next two seasons added 2 more championships, the Charity Cup & Charity Shield, whilst the long-term loss of some key players in 2005/06 resulted in ‘only’ a 5th placed finish and another Charity Shield win. In 2006/07 & 2007-08 we nearly achieved the ‘Holy Grail’ of Sunday football in Kent, the Kent Premier cup, but fell at the semi-final stage on both occassions, whilst finishing a disappointing 4th & 7th in the league respectively. 2008-09 saw a much needed new beginning for the club, with a new generation of players replacing most of the previous season’s squad. Jeff Allen stepped down after 7 mostly successful years, and ex-Blackheath & Huntsman stalwart Steve Foreman took over the Managers position. Dave Wilson June 2008 |
