Season 2010/2011 League Table (Second Division) at Sunday, 1st August 2010

History of Beckenham Imps Football Club

The Imps have a double celebration ahead of the 2006-07 season as they will not only celebrate their 21st Anniversary of the club’s formation, but alongside that achievement, they can also celebrate their return to OBDSFL Division Four for the first time in four seasons after their relegation in 2003, which is the only time the club has ever suffered in its history. Anyone fortunate to play for The Imps will experience a club esteemed with the legend of Sunday Football behind them rather than being a normal “run-of-the mill” club, with each and every Sunday morning seeing memories being made, both good and bad, as everyone involved with the Imps is welcomed with open arms with no cliques which are so familiar in place at other football clubs.

The Imps were formed in 1986 by two friends, Stephen Ruben and Dave Robbins and the club has evolved from their initial beginnings in Beckenham Place Park, through the Southern Area Sunday League from 1986 until 2000, when in their final season in the Southern Area, 1999-2000, the Imps achieved their only major club honours with a Runners-Up spot in Div.1 after an excellent run of form after Christmas which saw the club achieve automatic Promotion for the first time in the club’s history. With The Imps finally achieving success after many years of battling in the bottom ends of the table, the management of the club decided to take the opportunity to apply and become successful in their quest to join the OBDSFL and were elected into Division Four by the Management Committee in ready for the start of the 2000-2001 season, which was curtailed by bad weather, forcing only a half-season to take place and the Imps finished in ninth place, a place above the relegation places. Two further up and down seasons followed in Division Four before their relegation on the last day of the 03-04 season, when the situation was out of their hands with fixtures elsewhere determining their fate by the cruelest of fates, Goal Difference, before the Imps adapted better to Division Five life finishing fifth and four with their promotion challenges only being ended on the final day of the season, due to results going against them.

Last season saw the most eventful season in the Imps history as the legendary Imps Gaffer, Ruby, stepped down due to family commitments after managing the club for the majority of the 20 previous seasons to be replaced by Simon Quantrell-Evans, whose first season in charge saw a good start in both Cup and League fall away with their worst run of form ever, quickly followed by the departure of several Imps squad members who would all eventually go on to form a new OBDSFL club within the new year. However, some astute signings by the new Imps Gaffer helped steady the ship as the Imps embarked on a club record-equaling nine game unbeaten run after Christmas which helped secure fourth place and eventually, the Imps were awarded the third and final promotion spot after the OBDSFL ruled that Ex Blues Res could not accept promotion due to the Reserve Team rules in place therefore meaning, the Imps celebrated in the way they know best at their end-of-season celebrations.

This season, the Imps hope to continue their recent positive league campaigns by stabilizing the club in Division Four and potentially continue to progress and make a push for promotion for the fourth season in a row whilst hopefully having a good run in Jack Standen Cup, where they have already equalled their club’s best ever run to the Quarter-Finals and the upcoming Smales Trophy in the new year and as always, it will be the case of "Forza Il Imps!"
